Career opportunities in Agriculture

A career can be defined as a chosen pursuit. There are several career opportunities in the field of agriculture. People take up a different career for various purposes. However, every career is expected to earn money.

Agriculture comprises several activities such as production, processing, storage, preservation, distribution, and marketing of crops, animals and their products. Professional agriculturist work with federal and state government ministries, or in the private sector, in regional organizations such as the African Union, international organizations such as the United Nations Agencies, and non-government organizations. You may even decide to establish your own farm and become self-employed.

The various fields in which careers can be developed in agriculture include the following:

  • Agricultural research and production
  • Farm business management
  • Agricultural marketing
  • Agricultural engineering
  • Forestry
  • Fisheries

Careers in agricultural research and production include animal production, crop production, soils and surveying. Animal production is concerned with the rearing and domestication of livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats and poultry. Crop production involves the cultivation of land for the purpose of producing food or cash crops. Some professional areas in this field include crop production crop protection, soil science, farm mechanization and horticulture. In soils and surveying, there are farm planning, farm surveying and design, fertilizer management, soil physics and soil chemistry, soil testing and soil ecology.

Business management is an aspect of agriculture that deals with the management of farm enterprises.

Agricultural marketing is concerned with the supply, distribution and marketing of farm inputs and equipment. Such inputs and equipment include chemicals, feeds, fertilizers, farm tools and equipment, crops and foundation stock.

Careers in agricultural engineering include tractor repairs and maintenance, maintenance of large equipment, farm mechanization, building farm structures, and equipment servicing and lubrication.

Careers in forestry include forest resources management and wildlife. Careers in fisheries include fish farming, fish marketing, and fish processing.


In addition to the careers listed above, there are career opportunities in a regional and international organization. Regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), New Partnership for African’s Development (NEPAD) and The African Union Agriculture Commission are examples of regional organizations engaging agriculturists. Some international organisations where people develop careers in agriculture are; Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
